What is biodiversity?
The Convention on Biological Diversity defines biodiversity as
“the variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part; this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems.”
Scientists have identified the following leading causes of biodiversity loss:
- Land-use change
- Climate change
- Pollution
- Natural resource use and exploitation
- Invasive species
The biodiversity crisis
The biodiversity crisis presents a unique threat to our economies, our investments — and our way of life. More than half the world’s total GDP (US$44 trillion) is moderately or highly dependent on biodiversity1. The risks from nature loss compel us to examine the benefits that healthy ecosystems provide to finance.
Research and Positive Action
In 2019, the BNP Paribas Asset Management Sustainability Centre released our Global Sustainability Strategy. In 2021, this team of 27 ESG experts continued their in-depth research into our dependencies and impacts on nature which led to the publication of Sustainable by Nature: Our Biodiversity Roadmap.
This roadmap has been developed based on the six pillars of our approach to sustainability:

Taking Real-World Action
BNP Paribas Asset Management was recently a content partner in a film series, Age of Change: The Business of Survival presented by WWF and produced by BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions.
The series showcases stories of businesses that are leading the way in radical and innovative new efforts to secure a nature-positive future for our planet.
In our story Edward Lees, our co-head of the Environmental Strategies Group, talks about eco-system restoration solutions and how finance can help these solutions develop at scale.
